Summer Splash at Eden Project in Cornwall

The Eden Project will be awash with watery fun this summer as visitors of all ages try out some survival skills while having a splashing good time.
Summer Splash takes place in the main arena and visitors will be challenged to transport water around in weird and wonderful containers without spilling a drop.

Those who succeed can show their skills and ingenuity for living in the wild - but those who don't must be prepared to get soaking wet!

It is the first time there'll be a splash zone at the Eden Project and there are plenty of opportunities to get drenched from the water wheels, pumps and chutes - so visitors need to bring their swimming kit or waterproofs!

Summer Splash is part of Eden's popular Summer Survival Challenge which runs over the school holidays from July 24 to September 5, 2010.

As well as the H2O activities, there are a whole host of challenges to see if visitors have what it takes to thrive and survive in the wild:

• Following the success of last year’s den-building challenge, choose from a variety of materials including wood, sheets, ropes and pegs to make the best hideout possible.


• Learn the difference between edible and poisonous plants in a wild food forage demonstration.


• Try out a shot at the archery range with Eden's Bowmen.


• Plus, survival experts will be on hand to give lessons in making fires without matches and other outdoor survival skills.

Emma Hogg, Eden's programme producer, said: "We're putting on a brilliant range of activities to give families an opportunity to play together in the great outdoors, and have a taste of surviving in the wild whether it's transporting water around the site in Summer Splash or putting your archery skills to the test.

"It's going to be a splashing summer at Eden, but don't worry - we won't be wasting water. The water that is saved on site will be cleaned and then used in the Summer Splash. Any water that gets spilt will run off into Eden's lake, ready to be used again."

Quests, challenges and story-telling are also on offer over the summer holidays in Eden's Wild Days Out. The day-long outdoor activity programmes are suitable for families of all ages and feature bushcraft, scavenger hunts, shelter-building and wild art.

Running every Tuesday and Wednesday from July 27 until August 26, Wild Days Out are from 10am to 4pm and it's a good idea to book them beforehand by calling 01726 811 972.

The all-day sessions cost £20 per adult and £12.50 per child with under-threes going free.

Finally, Eden will be open later than usual during the summer season so visitors can enjoy its beautiful gardens until 8pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

There'll be a BBQ on with delicious local produce for sale as well as games, music and entertainment.
