You can't pick the weather but you can pick the holiday park...
Here at Parkdean Holidays we love to tell you all about how great our holiday parks are but why should you believe everything good we have to say? Well check out this independent review of our Mullion Holiday Park featured on the Sun newspaper website.
We think that you will agree come rain or shine that Mullion, as well as all our other Cornwall Holiday Parks, has something to offer the whole family for a great holiday.
I do love those flaming barbecue summers.
So I'm in a caravan at Parkdean's Mullion Resort in Cornwall with three children listening to the sound of rain pattering on the roof.
Miserable? Bored? Not a bit.
We, like thousands of others lured into holidaying in Britain by forecasts of a hot summer, made the most of a very wet week on Cornwall's beautiful Lizard peninsula.
In true Brit style, my kids had the perfect answer to those showers - take a dip in the heated OUTDOOR swimming pool.I had to laugh as I sat there under my umbrella while they happily got drenched in and out of the water.
They could have used the large indoor pool next door. But that was not as exciting as splashing about in the storm outside. Mad. But even grumpy dad eventually cast aside his brolly and jumped in.
And it summed up our fun time at one of Parkdean's best-placed parks. Sure, more sunshine would have been lovely. But my daughters Holly, 13, and Caitlin, ten, and their pal Abi, 11, weren't too bothered.
The park has loads to do - and there's something about rain that forces you to jump in the car and go off to explore. This part of west Cornwall has some amazing places to visit. I loved the many picturesque coves within a short drive of the park.
Mullion's little harbour is just ten minutes away, while stunning Kynance Cove is only five minutes further. Make sure that you visit here at low tide to enjoy the wonderful sandy beach and explore the caves. The view of the coast as you walk down the path to the cove is fantastic and sums up the magic of Cornwall.
While views are not for the kids, St Michael's Mount is. This little island a few hundred yards off the beach at Marazion near Penzance has a castle, parts of which date back to the 12th Century. Legend has it that a giant called Cormoran once lived on the island.
He used to wade ashore to the village and steal cattle until one night a brave local lured him into a deep pit and killed him. Halfway up the steep path to the castle is a heart-shaped cobblestone where it is said you can feel Cormoran's heartbeat. It's a nice tale and one that is certain to encourage tired kids to make the tough climb to the top.
We took a boat to the Mount but later, at low tide, we were able to walk back across the famous causeway - just in time for another downpour. Oh dear, soaked again. After their exhausting time of castles and giants, the girls were keen to return to the comfort of our caravan.
We had three bedrooms - a double and two small twins - a bathroom with shower, microwave, fridge-freezer and TV with DVD player. There are outdoor and indoor play areas, multi-sports court and field, ten-pin bowling, pool tables plus the dreaded amusement arcade.
I was impressed by the Parkdean Troupers. They ran various kids' clubs throughout the day, then put on excellent live shows every night. Food in the restaurant was very good. On a couple of nights we popped into Mullion village and had some excellent pub grub. The children's favourite day was spent just seven miles up the road at Flambards fun park near Helston.
It has thrilling rides to suit all ages but also has some fascinating indoor exhibitions - perfect in the rain. There's a Victorian village, Britain in the Blitz and wedding gowns through the ages.
So mix a caravan with a dash of Cornwall's finest attractions, add plenty of water and you've got the recipe for a great holiday.
