Cornish fishermen land record deal!
After 15 years of playing local gigs in the village of Port Isaac in Cornwall on a Friday night, traditional Cornish band 'The Fisherman's Friends' have successfully earned a £1m record deal with Universal.
The band have released an album of sea shanties, traditional tunes and folk music, with songs of longing and loss, in April 2010.
The members of the 10-strong band have all worked upon the sea at some point as fishermen, lifeboatmen or coastguards and are about to go global after a lucky break.
Record producer Rupert Christies was visiting the village on a family holiday when he saw the group performing in a local pub and was impressed by their talent.
The Fisherman's Friends look set to be in good company; Lady Gaga, Take That and Amy Winehouse are all signed to the same record label. Plus they have managed to secure a gig at the Glastonbury festival later this year!
