Surf's Up in Dorset

Boscombe Surf Reef is finally open after a decade of planning; the reef is the first of its kind in Europe.

Developers are now hoping that the reef will be able to create a standard of wave that can compete with any on the continent.

Boscombe is very close to Bournemouth, Dorset; it has always had a thriving surfing community however with this reef it is expected to become of Europe's finest surfing destinations.

The reef is not there to produce news waves from nothing but it works as a ramp to improve the shape and size of waves and how they break. Hopefully this will allow for more constant and higher quality waves with longer rides.

The reef however is not designed for beginners mainly due to the fact it is 220 meteres offshore, however if you want to have a go at surfing the waves closer to shore are an ideal standard plus there is a surf school to help you out. The RNLI will cover the reef 364 days of the year.

The reef is one part of a £10 million regeneration in Boscombe, brand new cafes, shops and warm changing facilities are being built to make Boscombe a much more visitor friendly resort.

Boscombe is soon becoming one of the countries trendiest seaside locations and a definite place to visit if you're on a holiday in Dorset.
