Pike fishing | Steve Nickelson

Steve Nickelson Fishing

Pic 1 of 7
Steve starts on peg 3 on a beautiful day on Kingfisher Lake. Lets see what he can do.

A DAY ON KINGFISHER!

Steve is fishing on peg 3 on kingfisher, it is in the narrow part of the back arm as you can see it's a very beautiful day, it is probably a bit bright, but Steve ensures me that he will catch!

His target fish are small carp and skimmers which are very prominent in this water. He has chosen to fish at about 6 meters directly in front of him as there is a small ledge where the fish like to settle. His rig consists of 0.10 siltar line which is about 3lb in old scale and Steve has chosen a .05 gr long body float this is so the shot travels through the water in a straight line and sits properly on the bottom. The long stem will be very stable in the water and Steve has started by feeding in some 4mm hard Cornish bagging pellets and fishing a 6mm over the top on a band so it stands out over his feed.

This pole is elasticised with grey hydro and he has to balance the elastic of the strength line to the size of fish he is trying to target, this will improve his catch rates by not bumping fish off. People sometimes do not take this into consideration when fishing or do not ask for the correct info, here at Warmwell we have people with that knowledge so ask! Steve has been fishing for about 25 minutes now and lost a carp about 12lb but that's fishing!! As you can see he has weighted this float right down so only half the brisell is showing.

He is also using a small feed pot on this pole, every time he puts out his pole he feeds about 10 pellets right over his float which will vastly improve his chances as he is feeding in the same spot and bringing the fish to him. Another trick is to pick out an object opposite yourself so you are fishing on the same line every time, a tree is good! Not a cow in a field that can move around! After losing that big fish it has taken some time to get the swim back on track but in good time things start to come together and bream with some other small fish start to arrive.

The bites are a bit tentative and he has to strike at everything but it works! After ten fish the bites get much more positive and the float starts to sail away! This is because the fish are starting to compete with each other for food. The thing you must remember when fishing is to think simple, keep things simple make sure that you are fishing at the right depth and that’s as hard as it gets. You can also come to Warmwell and catch like Steve, after all I taught him everything he knows!! HA HA
