Croyde's beachbreak really is famous for a reason!
Three-Sixty magazine's Bodyboard Manual says:
"Croyde works on all tides but is best at low tide when it gets hollow. High tide produces a long, peeling wave. Works on winds from SE-NE and a southerly swell.
The reef at Croyde works on a biggish swell and the bowl section is pretty intense. Beginners should avoid surfing or bodyboarding at low tide as rip currents can occur."
