Drennan Silverfish Festival 2016

Congratulations to Paul Yates for winning the 2016 Drennan Silverfish Festival at White Acres!

Only two anglers scored a maximum two section wins and it was Paul Yates who did best with a hard-earned 54lb 12oz total. On day one he weighed in a terrific 48lb 12oz catch from peg 27 on Pollawyn, consisting of roach and skimmers at 13 metres plus seven large barbel to 5lb in the latter half of the match. The next day, Paul drew the toughest section in the match, but still mustered a section-winning 6lb 5oz of F1s and skimmers from end peg 23 on Python.

Kian Wardle also scored maximum points and took 2nd place overall with a 42lb 9oz total. He caught 22lb 12oz of roach and skimmers from peg 11 on Sycamore on day one. The next day he drew peg 14 in the wides on Python and caught five F1s on the waggler plus skimmers on the short pole for 19lb 13oz.

The chasing pack saw six anglers all on 3 points, but it was the ever-impressive England ace Des Shipp’s 104lb 2oz total that was enough to clinch 3rd.

The top 10 and all of the section winners picked up cash prizes and there was over £3,000 of Drennan tackle up for grabs in the post-match raffle. The £400 random team prize also went to Paul Yates, Tom Scholey, Simon Mottram and Stewart Lister.

Thanks to all of the competitors for taking part. We hope next year's event will be even bigger and better!

National Fishing Month Round Up

For the seventh summer in a row White Acres supported National Fishing Month this July and August. Top brands; Garbolino, Preston Innovations, Frenzee and Guru, plus their sponsored anglers visited our lakes to give expert tips and tuition. Anglers of all ages and abilities were able to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in angling who were more than happy to share their secrets.

Frenzee hosted their first ever National Fishing Month event this summer and had some of the country’s top anglers with them; Mick Bull, Jon Whincup and Phil Canning. Glyn Reynolds from Frenzee explains ‘We were invited to take part in National Fishing Month at the fantastic White Acres complex. We jumped at the chance because as a forward thinking company we realise that these events are very important to the future of our great sport.’

‘We took some of our sponsored anglers down to offer free tuition to any of the residents staying at White Acres during our visit and the response was very encouraging’ said Glyn. Most of the attendees were children, accompanied by their parents – many of whom had never fished before. To see the joy on the youngsters faces upon catching a fish made the days very rewarding. Hopefully some of the participants will take their experiences away with them and take up our beloved sport.’

Glyn added ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fisheries Team at White Acres for making us welcome. A great few days and can’t wait for next year.’

Sound like fun? 2017 National Fishing Month Holidays are now on sale! Watch this space for details of which brands will be visiting and when.

Adam Rooney talks...

As Guru’s Brand Manager, Adam is tasked with developing new products as well as helping to market the company and recruit new Guru consultants. Alongside working for Guru for his day job, he also represents the company through his angling exploits. Adam recently fished for the England B Feeder team, which demonstrates that he knows exactly what he’s talking about when it comes to using Guru products! He’s seen as a talented rising star on the match circuit and he appears in many top angling publications, such as Improve Your Coarse Fishing. We sat down with Adam for a chat about his experience of White Acres.

What’s your favourite White Acres lake and why?
My favourite lake is Pollawyn. I like it because it holds a variety of fish, so depending where you draw you can target certain species to compete in your section. Pollawyn was also one of the first lakes to be built at White Acres so when I visited as a child it was the lake to be on, now when I return it always brings back fond memories.

Most memorable fishing experience at White Acres?
My most memorable fishing experience was winning the Preston Festival in 2003, I was only young and to beat such a strong field of anglers was amazing.

What keeps you coming back to White Acres?
I love the festivals, seeing fellow anglers I haven’t seen for ages and competing against the best. It’s the place to visit if you love competition fishing. The fishing is fantastic and the events are well organised.

What would you say to someone thinking about fishing their first festival?
Simple! Don’t think, do! Get yourself there! You will never look back.

What piece of equipment or product would you not be without on a trip to White Acres?
My meat cutter! White Acres fish love the meat!

Your top tip for fishing at White Acres?
Don’t ignore the other species. Carp are always the key species to catch in competitions, however, there are so many silverfish in the lakes, you can target them to help seal some valuable section points. Silverfish such as bream, skimmers, tench and roach can really help build your weight and it’s great fun catching them too.

New for 2016: Frenzee Week

w/c 15th August

For the seventh year in a row, White Acres is supporting National Fishing Month and we’re really looking forward to having Frenzee with us this summer.

Frenzee are a fast growing fishing tackle company based in Newtown, Mid Wales, who manufacture and produce innovative fishing tackle in their own factory.

Glyn Reynolds from Frenzee explains that "Here at Frenzee we believe it is very important that as an angling company we fully support National Fishing Month and encourage all anglers but especially the youth of today to get out on the bank. We are proud to be a part of this great event at White Acres so we’ll be bringing along some of the country’s top anglers with us; Andy Oldham, Mick Bull, Jon Whincup and Phil Canning."

The week will see Frenzee running a skills school, whereby anglers of all abilities can watch demonstrations of various methods with explanations of why that particular set up is being used. Guests will then be invited to try out the equipment and methods they’ve just seen. There’s also a chance to win great prizes throughout the week with daily raffles.

Don’t forget National Fishing Month events are only available by booking direct, so don’t miss out.

Steve Lockett talks...

We had a chat with the Angler’s Mail Fisheries correspondent

What’s your favourite White Acres lake and why?
I really like Jennys Lake for the silver fish sport. Fishing at 6m with loose fed casters, or over a bit of chopped worm, you can have a cracking days fishing with all sorts of species, not just carp. It can be hard work, but the reward is bites all day long and you never know what fish is coming next. It could be a 1lb skimmer, an F1, a double-figure carp, or a quality roach or perch.

For simplicity, casting a method feeder to one of the islands can bring some very big carp. You can drop the rig out and sit back and wait while taking in the surroundings. Or try casting every couple of minutes for a better days sport.

Most memorable fishing experience at White Acres?
Probably my first ever visit, which must be 20 years ago. I fished on Sycamore, casting a waggler between the islands for carp after carp. At the time it was quite rare to be able to catch so many of them in one session. This was in the days before pellets were widely used, so I was catapulting maggots out and most times the rod was wrenched round before I had time to strike at a bite.

What do you look for in a great angling holiday?
It’s important for me that there are other things to do close to the angling destination. Although I go for the fishing, I don’t want to just fish all day, every day. Places nearby for walks in the countryside, visits to local attractions, and great places to eat and drink are all part of an angling holiday for me.

When I am fishing, I like to be able to get away from crowds, so large complexes with plenty of lakes tick my box. As do lakes with lots of features like bays, islands, points and trees. They all help to give me some seclusion and the feeling that I could be the only person fishing that lake, that day.

What keeps you coming back to White Acres?
Well, I only live just over an hour and a half away. As an angling journalist, I need venues close to hand where I can almost guarantee a good net of fish for either me, or the angler featuring in an article. White Acres not only has great sport on tap, it also has a range of lakes so I can pick out a peg to suit a method or conditions.

What would you say to someone thinking about fishing their first match?
Don’t get too wrapped-up in the competition. Having a good day is a big part of fishing. Have a simple plan and execute it well rather than trying to do too much. Finally, take every fish that comes as a bonus; they’re what you’re there for and every bite is part of the experience.

If you find yourself drawn next to a ‘star’ angler, don’t be afraid to ask them questions. They will give you advice, as long as you don’t disturb their match preparations. In the many walks of life I’ve followed, I’ve always found that the most talented people, the genuine ‘stars’, are usually the most honest, open people as well.

What piece of equipment or product would you not be without on an angling holiday?
It doesn’t matter, because you can simply drop into the The Tackle Shop and buy anything you need!

Seriously, I have to know that my gear won’t let me down, and the part that seems to suffer the most in anyone’s set-up is the reel. Give me a high-quality reel and I’m happy I can deal with any other breakage or let-down.

Mine are getting on a bit now; Daiwa Exceller-X in 2500 or 4000 size. Despite getting a fearful battering in matches for huge nets of carp, lure fishing for big pike, being thrown into airplane holds before fighting some of the hardest-battling fish on the planet, they are still running smooth. I’ve heard some highly rated reels sounding like coffee grinders after a couple of seasons on the bank, but my Daiwas are still going strong nearly 10 years on.

Your top tip for fishing at White Acres?
Don’t get confused with rigs and tackle, feeding is the most important part of any anglers’ day. If you feed to make the fish compete against each other, then bites come easily.

Fish are simple creatures, attuned to the sound of potential food hitting the water. If you keep a little bit of bait trickling in, the fish will respond. Don’t expect them to drop down to the bottom for food; once they know it’s landing on a regular basis, they’ll come up through the water to the depth they’re most comfortable at. If you can work out this depth, by shallowing-up when you miss bites, then you’ll begin to really bag-up and a fantastic day is on the cards.

Lee Kerry on White Acres

Having fished Festivals across the UK for 15 years, it still excites me every time I get onto the A30 down to White Acres. It really can be classed as the dream holiday for match anglers, as good food, fishing and company are always on offer in and around the park.

Of course over the years the fishing has changed, but one thing remains the same. White Acres provides the biggest fishing festivals in the angling calendar. With 100s of anglers competing each year, it is impossible for everybody to be on a good peg or to win the match. So if your day doesn’t go to plan, it is great to return to fantastic accommodation, facilities and a family feel that White Acres and its residents always provide.

What makes the festivals particularly special for me however is the people, knowing what’s on offer in terms of fishing and prize money. A range of anglers, young and old, love to compete and enjoy the banter that comes with a well organised festival.

As for the lakes, they all have their own character and provide competitors with some great fishing.

Over the years the Fisheries Team have built up some of the most exciting and varied fishing lakes the country has to offer.

I am sure everyone at Parkdean will ensure White Acres remains the premiership of commercial fishing destinations! I can’t wait to get back!

Lake Focus: Twin Oaks

With 36 pegs over 2 acres this lake has been designed to make fishing as fair as possible. We dug this 25m wide lake with a laser equipped bulldozer to create accurate excavations so that the depth and profiles of the lake bottom would be exactly as we wanted them. The result is that we have a lake which is the same depth from one end to the other offering approx. 2m of water at its deepest point down the middle. The near and far banks slope down to this depth at an angle of about 45 degrees.

This will force the angler into fishing the pole, feeder or waggler. The average size of fish are approx. 5lb and match catches are in excess of 150lb. The lake stocks F1 Carp, Carp, Tench, Skimmer Bream and Roach and the best baits to use are pellet, paste and meat.
