My Top Tips for Southerness

Southerness is my favourite holiday escape at Parkdean.  My love for the region stems from amazing childhood holidays in South West Scotland with long bike rides, splashing in the sea and rock pooling.

My top tips for the best holiday at Southerness are:

Hit the Trails at the 7Stanes8

Southerness is close to some of the best mountain bike trails, suitable for all abilities, in the UK.  You can venture to Mabie Forest just a few miles away from Southerness Holiday Park for a cycling adventure.  There’s also Dalbeattie Forest close by with the famous Slab – ride it if you dare – I didn’t!!

Or for a little drive head for Kirroughtree – my favourite cycling route with some amazing sweeping trails, stunning views and children’s play areas.

Splash Out if it’s Wet Outside

Southerness has an amazing indoor swimming pool with flume.  Great for relaxing or when the weather takes a turn – our little one loved it.  For the more adventurous the sea is on your doorstep at Southerness so you can go and dip your toes or have a full swim if you’re brave enough!

Scones at Sweetheart Abbey92

Driving to the park we can never pass Sweetheart Abbey without my better half wanting to call in for a toastie and scone.  We’ve always had amazing weather stopping here and the Abbey is absolutely beautiful to see from the outside courtyard.

A trip to Mabie Farm94

Just near the forest at Mabie, the farm has everything to offer including the opportunity to feed the lambs, play in the straw barns for the little ones or the young at heart (me) or a pedal boat out on the lake.  The last time we visited they had a few daring escape artists so we had to help the staff track down their runaway lambs!

9A Hunt for a Hairy Haggis

As a child I was obsessed with hairy haggis cuddly toys and a trip to Southerness would not be complete without a trip to find one – I’ve looked from Stranraer, to Dumfries to Gatehouse of Fleet in recent years but they have become more elusive and rare!  If you spot one on your trip to Southerness let me know.

Curry Night, Winning Big & Entertainment

There’s lots to do on park but our favourite is arriving on a Friday night for a short break, getting a curry from the Coast Bar and Restaurant and wolfing it down to get our seats for Bingo and the Parkdean Troupers Entertainment Show.

If you’re looking for one of the best breaks head to Southerness – I’ll be back again this Summer!
