Dorset on the Big Screen

It’s now been over two months since hit ITV crime drama Broadchurch wrapped up & left our screens for another season; and we’ve been missing our weekly helping of absorbing plot lines, intriguing characters and of course the picturesque Dorset countryside!

Lucky for us the much anticipated Hollywood adaptation of Dorset’s most renowned writer, Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ hit in cinemas on 1st May, giving us plenty to feast our eyes on once again!

With its beautiful countryside and rugged coastline, it’s no wonder that Dorset’s stunning landscape was used by Hardy time and time again for his tales of love and tragedy. We were thrilled to see key locations West Bay, Sherborne, the glorious Elizabethan manor Mapperton House and Forde Abbey featured; all just a walk or short drive from us at West Bay Holiday Park.

Even more thrilling still was the release of Visit Dorset’s brand new walking trail leaflets based on the regions recent success on both the silver and small screens.

Broadchurch Trail

Alongside David Tennant and Olivia Colman, West Bay was undoubtedly the third (and most enchanting) star of the show. From the iconic towering sandstone cliffs, to villages and hideouts visited throughout the series, the Broadchurch trail is not to be missed for fans of the show!

Hardy Trail

Hardy spent most of his life in Dorset, so who better to show us around! Many of the grassy vales, pebble-strewn beaches and furze-flattened heaths of the county he dubbed South Wessex are little changed today, and so it’s easy to imagine yourself as beautiful Bathsheba back in days of old, wandering lovelorn against the scenic backdrop. Discover the romance of Dorset on the Hardy Trail.

Centrally located just a hop, skip and jump from the iconic East Cliff, West Bay Holiday Park is the perfect base to explore both trails. But if you’re looking to discover the place of the moment your way, why not try our woodland lodges at Warmwell Holiday Park, or splash into heated indoor and outdoor pools at Sandford Holiday Park!
