4 Tips for Easy Car Journeys With Kids

As a Mum to two young children I know that the best kind of family holiday is the caravan kind, discovering the best that Britain has to offer; and having worked for Parkdean for over 7 years I’ve had my fair share of UK holiday fun! If you’re holidaying in the UK this Summer chances are you’ll be travelling by car, so here are my top tips for surviving the journey with little ones…

Break up the journey

Why not make the journey part of your holiday? Look for something to do about half way along your route and make it into a day out. I think zoos, parks, nature reserves and farm parks are all great choices to stop off and get the kids out of the car to stretch their legs. Plus it means you’re really making the most of your free time together by starting your holiday early (and as a bonus if the kids really tire themselves out you might get some peace and quiet if they doze off on the second half of the journey)!

Plan ahead

Make sure you’ve got your route planned so that your journey time isn’t increased by heading off in the wrong direction. Bring directions, a map and if you don’t own a sat nav maybe you could borrow one from a family member.

Little ones nap times are a good time to be driving so if you know they always have a snooze at a certain time in the morning perhaps this is a good time to set off.

Lighten the load

There’s nothing worse than feeling cramped on a long car journey when you’ve managed to squash in everything but the kitchen sink. Check what your accommodation includes – often there’s no need to pack things like hairdryers, towels, travel irons etc. if these are already provided. I always try to pre-book the hire of things like travel cots and high chairs so that’s even less to squeeze in the car.

Don’t forget to pack essentials in easy to reach places. Snacks, drinks and baby essentials should be in easily accessible places and if you know the kids will want to jump straight in the pool when you get there make sure you pack the costumes and armbands at the top of the suitcase!

Keep them entertained

To avoid the dreaded ‘are we nearly there yet?’ make sure you’ve got plenty to keep everyone occupied. Some of the best car games are old favourites, such as, I spy and singing along to some favourite music (or a nursery rhyme cd for very little ones) always helps keep boredom away. Sticker books and colouring pads are always good choices but try to steer clear of things with lots of individual pieces like jigsaws otherwise you’ll be turning round every few minutes to help pick up pieces off the floor! If you’re buying anything new try to keep it secret until the journey so that it’s a special toy or activity just for the trip which makes it all the more exciting than something they play with every day at home (which also keeps them occupied longer!)

All in all relax and have fun; it will be worth the journey when you get there. Happy travelling!
