Bonfire Night in Cornwall

On the 5th of November, 1605, thirteen men plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Their assassination attempt was thwarted after Guy Fawkes, Britain’s most notorious traitor, was discovered in a cellar beneath the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder. After authorities stormed the cellar and captured Guy Fawkes, bonfires were set alight throughout the country to celebrate the safety of King James.

Since then, the 5th of November has become known as Bonfire Night and the tradition of lighting a fire still remains. Every year, visitors come to Cornwall because there are endless amounts of spectacular locations to watch firework displays. We’ve rounded up our favourite five below.

The Mermaid Inn, Newquay

Head down to Porth Beach on Saturday 5th of November to experience The Mermaid Inn’s annual firework display. Guests can sit back and relax on the golden sands and watch the fireworks explode over the beautiful Cornish coast. Only fifteen minutes from Holywell Bay Holiday Park, the fun filled evening is perfect for all the family.

Burgers, hotdogs, jacket potatoes, chips and snacks will be served from The Mermaid Inn carpark from 6pm. The firework display is extremely popular, so aim to get there in plenty of time. The event is free to enter and parking will be available for £3.00.

Priory Park, Bodmin

Bodmin’s amazing firework display returns to Priory Park on the 5th of November. Considered to be the largest display in North Cornwall, the event will comprise of fairground rides and plenty of hot food and alcohol stalls, which even serve mulled wine. This year’s music theme is John Williams, which means you can watch beautiful fireworks explode overhead whilst listening to Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jaws and more.

Only 20 minutes from St Minver Holiday Park, the gates will open at 6pm, the bonfire will be lit at 7pm and the firework display will start at 7.30pm. If you buy your tickets in advance, prices are £3.50 for adults and £2.00 for children. On the day prices are £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children. Being such a popular event, we recommend arriving early to avoid the queues.

Tremorvah Playing Fields, Truro

Truro’s annual bonfire returns to Tremorvah Playing Fields on the 4th of November. In association with Truro City Council, over 1,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event.

The gates will open at 5pm, there will be a Guy Fawkes competition starting at 5.30pm, the bonfire will be lit at 6pm and the firework display will start at 6:45pm. Hot food and refreshments will be available on the day and there will be numerous stalls selling glow sticks, sparklers and other merchandise.

Only 20 minutes from Holywell Bay Holiday Park, admission to Tremorvah Playing Fields is £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children. All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to Cornwall Air Ambulance and Penhaligon’s Friends.

Heartlands, Pool

On the 5th of November, the sky will light up in Pool, near Redruth, as Heartlands hosts its fifth Bonfire Night event. Over the years, Heartlands has become one of the best places in the region to celebrate Guy Fawkes night.

Roughly 30 minutes from Holywell Bay Holiday Park, the family friendly event will have fairground rides, food stalls, live music and even a bar. Over 8,000 people are expected to attend this year, so be sure to arrive early to avoid the queues.

Liskeard Rugby Training Ground

Liskeard and Looe Round Table will be hosting their annual firework display at Liskeard Rugby Ground on the 4th and 5th of November. Only 15 minutes from Looe Bay Holiday Park, the firework display is the largest in Looe. Gates will open at 7pm, and the firework display will start at 7.30pm.

Admission to Liskeard Rugby Ground is £4.00 for adults and £1.00 for children. Hot food and refreshments will be available to purchase. All the money raised will be donated to local causes.
