Breathtaking Beaches
Dorset isn’t without its fair share of sandy and shingly shores, either. Some of the most unique beaches in the country are along this stretch of coast - including Chesil Beach, an 18-mile long stretch of pebble that bisects the English Channel, and two lakes known as West and East Fleet (and, of course, the setting for the recent film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel On Chesil Beach).
For a more classic sandy beach experience, West Bay is a great choice for long, uninterrupted bucket and spade days, near to the pretty town of Bridport.

Although it might technically be prehistory, Dorset’s fossil heritage is well worth exploring as part of your Jurassic Coast holiday. The beaches around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are the best for coastal fossil hunting - although you’ll need to know what you’re doing, so guided walks are available and, indeed, recommended.
In terms of history that occured in the last million years, Dorset has options galore - such as Sherborne Abbey and the 19th-century Nothe Fort in Weymouth.

Other coastal gems include the Old Harry Rocks - a chalk formation just outside of Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck - and the panoramic views from the top of Colmer’s Hill, near Bridport.
