Dorset's Top Sights

Whatever your age, whatever your interests, you'll find attractions to love when you book a holiday in Dorset.

Dream of beaches? Take your pick from the ancient, fossil-strewn shores of the Jurassic Coast to the powdery sands of Bournemouth and Sandbanks. Dorset holidays offer the change to experience world-class natural wonders along the coast too, like Lulworth Cove and the iconic Durdle Door.

Tempted to learn a new watersport? Head to Poole and sail across its colossal natural harbour to idyllic Brownsea Island, the birthplace of the Scout Movement. Or, if you're a history fan, visit intimidating Corfe Castle, olde-worlde Dorchester and the excellent Tank Museum at Bovington.

Breathtaking Beaches

Dorset isn’t without its fair share of sandy and shingly shores, either. Some of the most unique beaches in the country are along this stretch of coast - including Chesil Beach, an 18-mile long stretch of pebble that bisects the English Channel, and two lakes known as West and East Fleet (and, of course, the setting for the recent film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel On Chesil Beach).

For a more classic sandy beach experience, West Bay is a great choice for long, uninterrupted bucket and spade days, near to the pretty town of Bridport.

History & Culture

Although it might technically be prehistory, Dorset’s fossil heritage is well worth exploring as part of your Jurassic Coast holiday. The beaches around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are the best for coastal fossil hunting - although you’ll need to know what you’re doing, so guided walks are available and, indeed, recommended.

In terms of history that occured in the last million years, Dorset has options galore - such as Sherborne Abbey and the 19th-century Nothe Fort in Weymouth.

Stunning Scenery

There’s a reason over half of Dorset is designated as an area of natural beauty, as it’s a simply stunning part of the world - especially when it comes to the coastline.

The Jurassic Coast, officially classed a World Heritage Site, includes such gems as the Durdle Door - a naturally occuring limestone arch jutting out of the crumbling cliffs, next to a secluded beach. Other coastal gems include the Old Harry Rocks - a chalk formation just outside of Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck - and the panoramic views from the top of Colmer’s Hill, near Bridport.
